What We Do

We are a grassroots, non-profit organization that works, in collaboration with citizens, organizations, institutions, government and businesses, for environmental protection and sustainable use of the greater Rochester region.  Our primary focus is to:

    • Promote sustainability by facilitating and encouraging the implementation of green practices by citizens, organizations, institutions, governments and businesses; and
    • Improve the quality of the water in the Lake Ontario region by enlisting and retaining broad public commitment for the remediation, restoration, protection, conservation and sustainable use of its natural resources.

Through private and public funding, we provide communication, education and programmatic services that promote protection and preservation of the environment.

Our Programs

 Finger Lakes Energy $mart Communities

The New York Energy $mart Communities Program creates networks of organizations and agencies that contribute to energy-focused community projects.  The program shares economic, environmental and social benefits through energy efficiency and diversifying of energy resources.
This program is funded across New York State by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).  CEI was awarded the Energy $mart Communities contract for the Finger Lakes Region in April 2007.  Through this program CEI has provided energy conservation and alternative energy assistance to residential and small business clients in the Region.  A special section is being added to the CEI website to enable visitors to gain access to a wide variety of energy conservation information.

Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative

Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative (LOCI) is a public, private, grassroots, regional partnership. The mission of the Initiative, encompassing all of New York State’s North Coast stakeholders from the Niagara River to the St. Lawrence River, is to enlist and retain broad public commitment for remediation, restoration, protection, conservation and sustainable use of the coastal region. This mission has been met up to now by securing funds and resources to achieve scientific understanding, educate citizens, and implement locally supported priorities, programs and projects as identified through LOCI's Action Agenda, released in 2006 and available on http://www.ceinfo.org/loci.

Rochester Green Business Network

The Rochester Green Business Network (RGBN) is a network of like-minded businesses, institutions and environmental professionals, who share a mutual concern for the state of our environment. Formed in 2003, RGBN’s goal is to promote good environmental management in businesses throughout the Rochester region. RGBN provides a forum for members and affiliates to share their ideas and practical experiences to improve environmental performance. For more information please visit the RGBN website at http://www.ceinfo.org/rgbn.

CARE Collaborative

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded $303,000 to the Center for Environmental Information in 2005 as part of their Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) grant program. CARE supports communities in creating and using collaborative partnerships to reduce exposure to pollution. Mobile air toxics, small stationary air toxics sources, lead poisoning and toxics information gap were the key issues CARE Rochester addressed.
When the grant period ended in October 2007, CEI continued this program via a multi-stakeholder group called the CARE Collaborative.  This group was originally formed during the grant period to identify important, under attended environmental issues in the greater Rochester area, then develop and implement projects/programs to address those issues.  Since the end of the grant period the CARE Collaborative has identified and worked on the following issues:

  • Pollution Prevention in the Auto Body Painting Industry;
  • Pollution Prevention for Construction Equipment; and
  • Energy Conservation Website.

Hemlock and Canadice Lakes Watershed Protection Project

CEI joined the Coalition for Hemlock and Canadice Lakes to serve as a fiscal agent for contributions to a special fund to support education work of the Coalition and help gain broad public understanding and support for protection of the watershed.
The protection of these valuable resources can be planned and executed in such a way that the City of Rochester enjoys continued access to good water and the citizens of New York State are satisfied that the watershed's wildlife, woodlands, geological rarities, and aesthetic opportunities are protected.
