Congressman James T. Walsh, the collaborative efforts of Florence Muller, Nature Conservancy of Central and Western NY, Finger Lakes Community College Environmental Conservation Department, and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Region 8 to protect the southern Honeoye Lake watershed, and Lee Loomis were honored at the recent Community Salute to the Environment in Rochester.
Congressman Walsh (R 25) was honored with the Environmental Leadership Award for his support of the Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative to restore, protect, and provide for sustainable use of New York’s North Coast, the latest of many actions that he has taken over the years to remediate and protect upstate New York’s environment.
For their collaborative efforts to protect the southern Honeoye Lake watershed, the Hugh Cumming Environmental Quality Award was presented to Florence Muller, Nature Conservancy of Central and Western NY Chapter, Finger Lakes Community College Environmental Conservation Department, and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Region 8. The project, nominated by the Honeoye Valley Association, demonstrates how an individual, a private land conservation organization, an educational intuition, and a state agency can successfully work together over several years to create one of the most unique environmental, educational and recreational resources in the Rochester-Genesee-Finger Lakes region. Through fee purchase and conservation easements which prevent development or subdivision of the property, 2300 acres of fields, wetlands, forested slopes and wildlife habitat will be managed to protect water quality and ecosystem values and services and serve as a focal point for environmental education.
Lee Loomis, a member of the CEI Board of Directors, was honored with the Hartwell Volunteer Award for his work in guiding CEI’s Energy $ave project, partially funded by NYSERDA, that assessed energy demand reduction strategies and technologies in the region and provided recommendations on accelerating outreach and marketing to residential and commercial consumers so as to save energy, save the environment and save money.
