Rochester, N.Y., September 20, 2004- The Center for Environmental Information (CEI) and Honorary Chairs Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks, and Edward (Ted) Peck Curtis Jr., will honor Congressman James T. Walsh at the 30th Annual Community Salute to the Environment, Wednesday, October 20, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Rochester. The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program.
Congressman James T. Walsh will be honored with CEI’s Environmental Leadership Award for his work in the remediation and protection of upstate New York’s environment. Most recently Congressman Walsh supported the Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative and in the past has been the sponsor or cosponsor of a broad range of environmental legislation. In addition, he is a member of the Honorary Board of Republicans for Environmental Protection and is one of 20 bipartisan sponsors of the Climate Stewardship Act.
Dr. Gene Likens, National Medal of Sciences honoree, is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the event. His speech, “Acid Rain: Unfinished Business,” will document research linking the increasing presence of acid rain and fossil fuel combustion in North America and the long term consequences. Dr. Likens is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a recipient of numerous honors and awards in the U.S. and abroad.
