LOCI Implementation Grants

AREAS FUNDED

For this round of proposals, applications are invited in the categories described below:

A. Wastewater Treatment and Infrastructure
Individual grant requests invited in the range of $5,000 to $75,000

Proposals are invited for projects that will facilitate the improved treatment of municipal waste. Given the extraordinary cost of sewage treatment infrastructure development or upgrades, it is expected that applications in this category will be for well-defined elements within a larger initiative. For example, funding through LOCI may be used for feasibility studies, technology upgrades or installations, or in combination with other committed funds to extend sewer lines.

B. Coastal Remediation and Restoration
Individual grant requests invited in the range of $5,000 to $60,000

Projects in this category are aimed at restoring or remediating conditions where documented environmental impairments exist. Projects may include either a) development of a community-based remediation/restoration plan OR b) implementation of strategies to abate sources of impairments and improve environmental quality. Examples of projects include, but are not limited to, nutrient management on agricultural lands, stormwater management, remediation of historical pollutants, erosion control measures, riparian corridor management, habitat or fishery restoration, and programs to reduce pollutants from faulty septic systems. All projects must include a post-implementation monitoring or evaluation component.

C. Sustainable Use/Strategic Planning
Individual grants requests invited in the range of $5,000 to $20,000

Applications in this category should make use of new tools for initiating sound, local land use planning or land management that encourages:

  1. protection of critical natural resources, such as wildlife habitat, drinking water sources, or recreational resources; or
  2. conservation of open space (e.g., via easement, acquisition, or management practice); or
  3. application of Smart Growth principles

Projects are encouraged that build community capacity for sound environmental decision-making. Funds can be used for strategic planning processes, acquisition of technology that enhances planning, or implementation of recommendations in existing plans or strategies that encourage sustainable use of the coastal environment

Projects in this category may also contribute to database development that may benefit strategic planning and public decision making in the LOCI project area/coastal environment. Projects must emphasize electronic formats and public access. Project proposals should specify data format(s); where data will be housed; how it may be accessed; and its practical applications.

D. Coastal Education
Individual grant requests invited in the range of $2,500 to $10,000

Education projects consistent with chapter three in the LOCI Action Agenda would enhance understanding among stakeholders about coastal environmental problems and/or actions to abate problems or achieve desired results. Education projects should be focused on a specific problem and have clearly defined goals.

The number of projects funded and total dollars awarded within the four categories will depend upon the pool of proposals submitted. The intent of LOCI is a balanced approach, distributing funds to highly qualified projects topically among the four project categories and geographically along the LOCI project area.
