CARE Collaborative Working Group

2006 Update

Sally Howard was brought on board in 2006 to coordinate and facilitate meetings of the Rochester CARE Collaborative Working Group. Sally continues to facilitate the progression and growth of the Rochester CARE Collaborative Working Group, which is working to proactively analyze, assess and respond to key toxics issues in the larger community. As of October 2006 the CARE Collaborative Working Group has reached the following milestones:

  • As of the September 2006, the group has added 22 members representing 23 additional organizations to the existing 12 member Collaborative and conducted meeting #5 of 6 for first year. See list of CARE Collaborative members.
  • The group has also identified three opportunities for collaboration (outside of the Collaborative’s initiatives) on toxics issues through existing programs and groups.
  • Through invitation letters and follow-up calls to 65 business, citizen and government organizations, many more people and organizations in the community were made aware of the mission and progress of the Collaborative.
  • With the new members in attendance, and the assistance of an invited facilitator, the Collaborative discussed and prioritized a list of 55 toxics issues into High, Medium and Low Impact in preparation for choosing two of the High Impact issues for action.
  • Through facilitated prioritization exercises, the group narrowed this to five categories of under-attended toxic issues most needing remedial action: fossil fuel pollution, pesticides, mercury, outdoor burning (wood, leaves, trash), and indoor air quality at home or school (such as second-hand smoke, mold, chemicals, pesticides, outgassing, particulates, etc.)
  • Three major print media organizations were informed of all Collaborative meeting dates, mission and invited to the meetings.
  • Next step is to define how the group can best work with the regional media to accomplish our program goals.
