Lead Free Living

Reducing Lead Hazards in Urban Homes that House Children Under Six

Background

Reducing the tradegy of lead poisoning in urban youth is a high priority of the City of Rochester and also of the Rochester CARE Program. This insidious toxin poisons over 900 children under six in Monroe County each year, with most of those affected living in urban neigborhoods.

To address this concern, the Rochester CARE Collaborative in close consultation with the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning hired and trained a Lead Remediation Funding Liaison as a staff member of Neighborhood Housing Services to proactively link property owners housing children under six with available funds to remediate the lead hazards in their properties. The Funding Liaison will, successfully connected 125 homeowners with children under six and 125 landlords with properties often housing children under six with funding to remediate their properties' lead hazards.
